Myths vs. Facts: Addressing Common Misconceptions about Poppers

Poppers have been a staple of gay culture for decades, but somewhere along the way, myths and misinformation crept in and muddied the waters. Whether you're a seasoned user or poppers-curious, getting the facts straight makes for a better, safer experience all round. So let's set the record straight and bust some of the most common poppers misconceptions once and for all.

Myth: Poppers are Illegal

People may be put off from using poppers due to anxiety surrounding whether what they’re doing is illegal. First of all, possession of poppers in the UK is completely legal, so no need to worry there. Additionally, at Room Aromas poppers are sold as aromas, or odourisers, and are technically not sold for human consumption: hence, the selling and purchase of them is legal. Despite this, do not worry that they are unsafe to consume. If you buy poppers from a trusted retailer, such as Room Aromas, and consume them safely, you’ll have no issues.

Myth: Only Gay People use Poppers

There is a stigma surrounding poppers that they are only used in the queer community, or that if you take poppers, you must be gay. These are harmful, offensive stereotypes, and completely untrue! The history of poppers is indeed intertwined with the LGBTQ community, however this doesn’t mean they can’t be consumed by anyone else. There are plenty of circumstances where poppers can enhance the experience: whether it’s a party or a club, or you’re just looking to endeavour into the unknown and experience something new. In addition, poppers are commonly used as a relaxant during sex, and sometimes to enhance meditation: they are more versatile than just something queer people use to party!

Myth: Poppers are Dangerous

Now to be clear, poppers CAN be dangerous if used incorrectly. This is why it’s so important to know how to use them beforehand. Here are a couple of the more common misconceptions regarding poppers and danger:

Drinking Poppers for a Stronger Effect is Safe

This is absolutely incorrect. Drinking poppers is NEVER safe. They are intended to be used as a scent, not a drink. If you or someone else drinks poppers, it is vital to get medical help as soon as possible.

Poppers Kill Brain Cells

This is scientifically wrong. Poppers affect the blood vessels, not the nervous system, and as such they are not neurotoxic. Despite this, excessive use can reduce oxygen supply to the brain which can in turn cause neurological damage. It is therefore very important to use poppers in moderation, and to seek out knowledge from reliable sources before any use. See our blog for more information on how poppers affect the brain.
