Without even taking into account the fact that counterfeit poppers are illegal, they can also be extremely dangerous. They often use cheaper ingredients which can cause serious health problems: eye and skin damage but also potential popper lung and maculopathy. Long term health conditions like this are why it’s recommended to always buy poppers from a legitimate website or shop.  

What to Look for When Trying to Identify Counterfeit Poppers  

Price  

If you come across poppers for a suspiciously low price point compared to legitimate retailers (such as Room Aromas), it probably is too good to be true. Always check the general market price: if the product you’re looking at massively deviates from this, it’s best to avoid. 

Ingredients 

Always check the ingredients list on poppers bottles. To cut costs, counterfeit sellers often include chemicals such as ethyl chloride which can result in ill effects such as permanent eye damage and skin irritation. We recommend looking at the ingredients list on the brands official website or another legitimate retailer so you know when you’re buying real poppers. 

Labels 

Brands (such as Rush and Liquid Gold) use a glossy, plasticised label. If you buy one of these brands and the label is made of paper or something else, it’s a strong sign it’s a counterfeit.  

3D Security Stickers 

Increasingly brands are using 3D security stickers and holographic seals to legitimise their products. Major outfitters like Rush and Jungle Juice are at the forefront of this practice, so if you’re buying products that claim to be these but without the aforementioned, be careful.  

Physical Cap/Bottle 

Some brands have signature caps/bottles that counterfeiters don’t go to the bother of replicating. Double Scorpio’s emerald green bottle or Rush’s ribbed, child-safe cap. It’s best to know these trademarks so you can spot, in this case, if they’re real rush poppers. 

Colour/Scent of Liquid 

Some poppers have a distinctive colour/scent that counterfeits won’t have as chemically they won’t be exact replicates. For example, poppers are typically a clear, pale yellow, whereas counterfeits will often be slightly darker and cloudy.  

CAS Numbers 

Legitimate bottles will have CAS numbers on the back (for example 110-46-3 for amyl nitrite) are a great indicator that the product is legitimate. If the CAS numbers are not there, it’s best to investigate further as this is a major warning sign.
